Services Offered by Immigration Services

Immigration Services will assist in securing work permits for tenure-stream and tenured academic and librarian staff, and full-time ranked Contract Academic Staff (CAS). Once in Canada, Immigration Services will support the application for permanent residency and subsequent work permit renewals.

Support will extend to the married or common-law spouse as well as dependent children under the age of 22.

The for the work permit, temporary permits for the family members, permanent residency and associated costs (e.g.: medical exams, police certificates, translations, etc.) are the responsibility of the candidate.


Work Permit

When the recruitment is complete, the faculty鈥檚 immigration advisor will initiate the immigration process by contacting the selected candidate. The immigration advisor will work with you to secure a work permit and will explain the application process to you.
An overview of the work permit application process is presented below for information purposes.



Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP)

Under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), obtaining a work permit is a
two-step process:

1. Applying for an LMIA and CAQ

大发彩票平台 will complete the process of obtaining an (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), Service Canada, and a Quebec (CAQ) from the Minist猫re de l鈥橧mmigration, de la Francisation et de l'Int茅gration. Processing times are around 3 months.


2. Applying for a work permit

Upon issuance of an LMIA and CAQ, a work permit can be requested from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).


Citizens of , this must be done online from the country of residence. Processing times can be several months.

Citizens of can apply in person for a work permit at a port of entry (airport or land border) under certain conditions.



US Citizens

Citizens of the United States benefit from simplified immigration procedures under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (formerly the North American Free Trade Agreement NAFTA).

Under CUSMA, they are eligible for work permits for university professors and Librarians without having to obtain an LMIA and CAQ. The work permit can be requested in person at the airport or land border.

Travel to Canada聽during Recruitment Process

Candidates invited to visit 大发彩票平台 for an in-person interview during the recruitment process can travel to Canada as business visitors.

Citizens of the United States and green card holder of the United States do not require prior authorization. All others require either a temporary resident visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) depending on their country of citizenship. To determine your visa requirements, please

Family Members

Spouses

Married spouses or common-law partners may obtain without having a specific job offer if certain requirements are met. In most cases, spouse will only qualify for an open work permit if you have or will have a work permit valid for at least 16 months at the time when the spouse applies for their permit. Spouses who do not qualify for an open work permit may come to Canada as long-term visitors not authorized to work in Canada, as students or by securing their own work permit independently.

The application for an Open Work Permit may be done at the same time as your application, or afterwards.

The international spouse of a repatriated Canadian is not entitled to an Open Work Permit. Please refer to Repatriate Canadians for more information on the sponsorship process.



Dependent Children

The following section applies to 鈥溾 as defined by IRCC. Children (biological, adopted and/or stepchildren) under the age of 22 years-old are included.

Minor children under the age of 18 attending primary or secondary school may reside and study in Canada with only a visitor record if they come from a . Children who are citizens of other countries must initially apply for a Certificat d鈥檃cceptation du Qu茅bec (CAQ) and a study permit from their country of residence.

Dependent children attending Cegep or University must apply for a Certificat d鈥檃cceptation du Qu茅bec (CAQ) and a study permit. This process can take several months and should be started as soon as they have been admitted to their study program.



Late Arrivals

If your spouse and/or dependent children are arriving at a later time, please inform your immigration and relocation advisors.

Repatriated Canadians (with international spouses/common-law partners

Immigration Services will offer immigration support for married or common-law spouses as well as dependent children under the
age of 22 of repatriated Canadians.



Working in Canada

International spouses of Canadian citizens are not eligible to apply for an open work permit from abroad. They can arrive in Canada on a visitor status, which may require applying for a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) prior to travelling depending on their nationality.

Once in Canada, international spouses of Canadian citizens can apply for if they are sponsored and conditions are met. Obtaining open work permits may take time. Spouses seeking to quickly take employment may need to apply for a closed work permit supported by a job offer from a Canadian employer.



Permanent Residency

It is strongly advised that repatriated Canadians begin the process to as soon as possible. Sponsorship can be initiated from abroad under certain conditions.



Health Insurance

International spouses of repatriated Canadians are considered visitors, and are ineligible for Quebec health insurance (unless they have individual status that makes them eligible). Partners should arrange for private health coverage before entering Canada.



Provincial Plan Replacement Coverage

大发彩票平台 provides Provincial Plan Replacement coverage for international spouses of repatriated Canadians for the first three months of the new academic staff member鈥檚 appointment. Subsequently, this coverage must be applied for and purchased every three months until the spouse becomes eligible for Quebec health insurance with La R茅gie de l'assurance maladie du Qu茅bec (RAMQ).
