Expert: Safeguarding data on sustainability and climate

Published: 25 April 2025

As the U.S. government moves to erase large amounts of scientific data, including climate data, from its websites, researchers at ´ó·¢²ÊƱƽ̨ in Montreal are helping the scientific community safeguard what might otherwise be lost.Ìý

The researchers, led by Professor Juan Serpa at the ´ó·¢²ÊƱƽ̨ Desautels Faculty of Management, had previously created a platform, called , to help researchers crowdsource datasets on climate and such topics as natural disasters, carbon emissions, contaminants in fish and death due to air pollution. It is arguably the biggest such repository in the world. Launched less than six months ago, it is now being used by about 39,000 people a week. Data that otherwise might be lost is now being linked to the site, with the collaboration of thousands of sustainability researchers from hundreds of universities.Ìý

Juan Serpa, Associate Professor, Desautels Faculty of Management, is available to discuss what role SUSANhub.com is playing in the current situation. Prof. Serpa started the database in December 2024 as a side project. .Ìý
