Remembering Howard Riggs

Howard Riggs was a dedicated, hard-working professor of math education. His work ethic was a product of his Prairie upbringing and his deep commitment to his students. He was hired by ´ó·¢²ÊƱƽ̨ to teach social studies, but was pressed into service as a math educator in the Department of Elementary Education, one of the units that eventually morphed into DISE. Forced by budget cuts and growing enrolment into teaching methods courses of 100+ students, Howard developed a unique, creative approach in which students moved from one set of hands-on activities to another in what he called the "math lab."
Howard was a passionate proponent of close relations between the Faculty of Education and the schools. His own classroom materials and approaches were closely linked to Québec's elementary math curriculum, and he logged hundreds of miles each year visiting his students in their practicum classrooms. He was also an exemplary colleague in service to the Faculty: an active participant in governance and administration, a constant supporter of junior colleagues, and a strong voice for students. Those fortunate enough to work with him or attend his classes will surely mourn his passing. -- I write to share the sad news of the passing of Dr. Howard Riggs, a faculty member in DISE for three decades.
