Inspections are conducted annually, typically scheduled from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Wednesday through Friday.
While the testing, inspection, and repair processes may be intrusive, the following steps are part of our standard procedures:
- Notification: We inform Building Directors via email in advance of any testing or work to be performed.
- Signage: Proper signalization will be installed at key points throughout the building to inform staff, students, and visitors that testing is in progress.Â
- Noise Reduction: We aim to minimize the exposure of building occupants to noise from equipment testing.
- Respect for Activities:Â Those involved in the inspection process are instructed to respect building activities and cooperate with building users and occupants.
We rely on the cooperation of the Building Director to advise all building occupants of the upcoming inspections; of any rooms that are off-limits due to sensitive experiments, access restrictions, etc; and if equipment inspections could interfere with important activities (e.g., exams, special events).
Fire Alarm Inspections
- Bell Testing: We test fire bells to ensure all bells function correctly. Depending on the building size, this test lasts between 5 minutes to 1 hour.
- Smoke/Heat Detector Testing: We test each smoke/heat detector by smoking or heating them until they react and send a signal to the fire panel. This process takes 1 to 3 minutes per detector.
- Manual Pull Station Testing: All manual pull stations are tested by being pulled and reset.
Sprinkler Inspections
- Room-to-Room Visual Inspection: A visual inspection is conducted for each sprinkler head.
- System Testing: Additional tests are carried out in the sprinkler room, which do not affect building operations.
Maintenance of Fire Equipment:
After each inspection, a detailed report is sent to the Operations team for analysis. The Fire Prevention Office reviews the report and may recommend repairs. If necessary, a specialist will be scheduled to complete repairs and ensure the equipment complies with NFPA codes
