Biography:

Marie-Josée Fleury is a Professor at ´ó·¢²ÊƱƽ̨’s Department of Psychiatry. She joined the Douglas Institute’s research team in 2002 after completing her doctorate in public health, and is also an Adjunct Professor at the Université de Montréal’s School of Public Health. Over the years, she served as consultant for the Quebec government and for various European organizations, and has led several research groups. More specifically, she was the Expert Advisor (2010-2012) on the mental healthcare performance report of the Commissaire à la santé et au bien-être (CSBE), Scientific Director at the Centre de réadaptation en dépendance de Montréal – University Institute (2012-2016), and axes leader for the Network on suicide, mood disorders and associated disorders (2013-2025) and the Réseau de recherche en santé des populations (2021-2025). She authored and co-authored over 350 publications, and has done as many presentations at national and international conferences. Besides receiving salary awards (2002-2014), she was awarded many research grants, including several for projects currently under her direction (CIHR, SSHRC, FRQS, FRQSC, Health Canada). Her research seeks to gain a better understanding of the key components that can improve healthcare systems, and of the adequacy of services in relation to the needs of service users, particularly in the areas of mental health, addiction, and homelessness. Her lines of research deal with health systems analysis, services and needs assessment, and implementation studies. She also conducts epidemiological and outcome studies on quality of life, suicidal behaviors or death, based on large cohorts that investigate administrative databases and surveys, as well as mixed-methods analyses that include users, clinicians, and decision-makers. Many of her studies have examined the quality of the mental healthcare system, with special focus on emergency departments and hospitalizations.
