Tracie Barnett Awarded King Charles III Coronation Medal for Outstanding Community Service

Tracie Barnett, PhD, Associate Professor at the Department of Family Medicine and researcher at the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre, has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of her exceptional contributions to public health and community service.

This Canadian commemorative medal, created to mark His Majesty King Charles III鈥檚 coronation on May 6, 2023, is presented to individuals who have made notable impacts within their province, region or across Canada. Professor Barnett was nominated by the Heart & Stroke Foundation for her unwavering dedication to improving heart and brain health throughout the country.

Professor Barnett's work with the Heart & Stroke Foundation has had a profound impact on advancing public health initiatives aimed at preventing cardiovascular disease and promoting community well-being. Her research and advocacy have played a vital role in shaping healthier environments and supporting equitable access to care, particularly in underserved populations.

With expertise in epidemiology and health promotion, her research explores the natural history of cardiometabolic health and related behaviors. She focuses on the impact of the built environment and personal social networks on non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Her work involves creating meaningful indicators within activity spaces and social environments, monitoring their evolution over time, and identifying targets for intervention. Additionally, she collaborates with clinical and patient partners to co-develop and implement health promotion strategies in under-resourced settings.

Doug Roth, CEO of Heart & Stroke, emphasized the importance of Professor Barnett鈥檚 contributions in a letter notifying her of the award. 鈥淵our passion and dedication to making a difference is truly inspiring,鈥 he wrote. 鈥淭his recognition serves as a tangible reminder of how deeply valued and appreciated your efforts are, not only by this organization, but also by all those in Canada whose lives are touched by the lifesaving work we do together.鈥

Professor Barnett will be formally honored at a provincial medal ceremony and reception hosted in Montreal by Michelle Brisebois, Senior Vice President for Quebec at Heart & Stroke, in the coming weeks.

Congratulations Professor Barnett on this well-deserved honor!
