Courses

EPSC 590. Applied Geochemistry Seminar.

Note: For information about Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 course offerings, please check back on May 8, 2025. Until then, the "Terms offered" field will appear blank for most courses while the class schedule is being finalized.

Credits: 3
Offered by: Earth & Planetary Sciences (Faculty of Science)
This course is not offered this catalogue year.

Description

Seminar course devoted to field case studies that illustrate the applications of geochemical principles to solving geologic problems. Each student will prepare and lead a class devoted to a geochemical subject of their own choosing.
  • Winter
  • 3 hours seminar
  • Prerequisite: permission of instructor

Most students use Visual Schedule Builder (VSB) to organize their schedules. VSB helps you plan class schedules, travel time, and more.

ESYS 200. Earth-System Interactions.

Description

Topics related to climate change, biogeochemical cycles and natural resources are evaluated from an Earth System perspective. Exploration of the scientific literature in targeted areas of Earth system science with a focus on human-Earth interactions. Emphasis is on complex global issues that cross traditional disciplines, and interpreting and communicating academic knowledge derived from Earth system research.
  • Winter
  • 3 hours lecture
  • Prerequisite(s): ENVR 200 or permission of instructor.

Most students use Visual Schedule Builder (VSB) to organize their schedules. VSB helps you plan class schedules, travel time, and more.

Research

Both the Earth鈥檚 water and carbon cycles are highly sensitive to climate change, with important implications for both the future of global water resources and possible carbon-cycle feedbacks to global warming. My research is centered around analyzing the abundance of rare isotopes in individual organic molecules to trace water and carbon-cycle change in time and space. Much of my work focuses on analyses of freshwater and coastal sediments in order to understand both modern biogeochemical processes and environmental change on timescales ranging from months to millions of years. Specific questions I am interested in include: how methane production by microorganisms in aquatic environments responds to environmental change; how the transport and storage of organic carbon in terrestrial ecosystems is influenced by climate change and human land use; and how precipitation and ecohydrology have been affected by past intervals of global and regional climate change. I also have a long-standing interest in how ancient societies both altered biogeochemical cycles and were impacted by past climate change.
