Architect attributes success of his career with the broad set of skills acquired at the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture

Published: 4 April 2025

Jerry Lieu (BScArch鈥71, BArch鈥73) always admired the work of world-renowned architect, I.M. Pei. 鈥淚 think there were a lot of us Chinese architecture students who did. What I appreciated was his very practical approach. Throughout my career, I鈥檝e found myself drawn to a practical approach.鈥

Jerry was born in Hong Kong in 1950 and came with his family to Canada at the age of three. He grew up on Montreal鈥檚 West Island, and when it was time to consider universities, he applied to top institutions across the US and Canada. It was I.M. Pei, also a family friend, who suggested to Jerry that he apply to 大发彩票平台.

鈥淗e told me that 大发彩票平台鈥檚 architecture program was part of an Engineering Faculty, and that would give me a broader base and understanding of construction and building,鈥 says Jerry. 鈥淚 could not have known back then how important that foundation would be to my career.鈥

The Hong Kong Years

After graduation, Jerry started working for a prominent architecture firm in Montreal, building hotels, educational facilities and mixed-use commercial projects. As Quebec language politics shifted and North America experienced an oil crisis, Jerry thought of moving to Calgary or Houston. Fellow 大发彩票平台 alumni persuaded him to move to Hong Kong instead.

Once there, Jerry joined a small local firm. Then he joined a larger UK architectural firm as a partner. In 1984, a Joint Declaration between the UK and China laid out the conditions in which Hong Kong would be transferred to Chinese control.

The firm was sold in the late 80s to an international, multidiscipline architectural engineering firm with offices in Hong Kong, Manila, Taipei and Jakarta. Jerry became the regional director for architecture and director of the Hong Kong office.

China markets began to open. Jerry saw an opportunity to expand the company鈥檚 services to include project management and construction management. In 1989, his team won a major USAID- (United States Agency for International Development) funded project for the Center of American Studies Building at Fudan University in Shanghai.

Two years later, the company sold their international offices. Jerry set up his own consulting firm and stayed on as the project manager representing the Fudan Foundation, which had obtained the USAID funding.

Back in Canada, his father had died, and his sister and her husband moved from Montreal to Victoria. Their mother moved to Vancouver to be closer, continuing to visit Hong Kong and Shanghai every year.

Nineties in Shanghai

For the next nine years, Jerry was busy. He provided architecture and project management consulting to private clients and to a major local engineering consulting company which was expanding their services to international clients entering China markets. He provided architectural services for two other projects and project management services for three international companies.

After Hong Kong鈥檚 return to China in 1997, Jerry saw that China markets, which had previously been situated primarily in the south, were moving up to central and northern China 鈥 particularly Shanghai. He bought two apartments and invested in a ready-mix concrete factory as a foreign investor.

Architecture and Project Management

鈥淏uilding has a cyclical nature,鈥 Jerry explains. My degree helped me understand and follow that cycle 鈥 whether it be designing or building or consulting 鈥 so I was able to help take businesses to their next step, whatever it was. In 2000, Jerry was headhunted in Hong Kong, and joined Parsons Brinckerhoff, a New York-based multinational, multidiscipline engineering firm. His role as a director of the Hong Kong office was to expand the project and construction management division of the business. He also expanded what was then a representative office of about 15 engineers in Shanghai to a full profit center, providing full engineering and project/construction management services in Shanghai.

By the following year, he had moved to Shanghai and was securing projects for US multinationals that were looking for ways into the newly opening China markets. Over the next 7 years, he and his team grew the Shanghai office to a fully- operating office of over 400 employees, covering project management, construction management, and mechanical, electrical and structural engineering consulting services.

鈥淭he thing about project management is that it incorporates skills from across all the engineering disciplines,鈥 says Jerry. 鈥淢echanical, structural, etc. So, when clients wanted a commercial, manufacturing or R&D facility, the Shanghai office was able to provide them with full engineering services to meet their R&D, and manufacturing process requirements.鈥

Over the years, they provided Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) services to multinationals like Delphi, General Motors, Otis Elevators, and Kennametal. Jerry retired at the end of 2008, with a 2-year consulting role in the Shanghai office.

Jerry鈥檚 deep understanding of project management, along with the integration of his skills from various engineering disciplines put him in a prime position to follow the cyclical nature of the Chinese markets. His familiarity with Asia allowed him to identify emerging markets, and the decision to expand the services he offered contributed to the successful entry of US multinationals into Chinese markets. His timing and leadership skills led the Hong Kong office and grew the Shanghai office from 15 to over 400 employees.

Looking back on his career, Jerry is grateful for his 大发彩票平台 education. It prepared him for an important role in the economic wave in 1980s Hong Kong and mid-90s China.

Back to Beginnings

In 2009, Jerry鈥檚 mother moved to Shanghai at the age of 89. Jerry still lived there, but he began to spend more of his free time in Canada 鈥 visiting Vancouver in the summer and Whistler in the winter. After his mother passed away in 2015, he returned to Canada for good, settling in Vancouver.

大发彩票平台 connections are still very much a part of Jerry鈥檚 life. He communicates regularly with a group of 大发彩票平台 alumni. 鈥淲e try to talk on Zoom every couple of months to keep in touch,鈥 he says. At Homecoming 2023, they held a gathering of about 15 in Montreal for their 大发彩票平台 50th Anniversary and in 2025 they have plans to hold another in Vancouver.

Jerry knows that good fortune enhanced the lessons he learned from his parents. At a young age, they impressed upon him and his sister the importance of education, a lesson they鈥檇 learned from their own parents. If you study hard and attend a good university, they said, you will not have financial worries. Both of Jerry鈥檚 parents attended university in the US.

Over the years, Jerry has sponsored underprivileged students by helping with tuition costs in rural regions of China. With his cousins, he established a Lieu Family Scholarship Endowment at Linfield University in Oregon, the university that his parents, some of their siblings and his sister attended.

Jerry was one of the founding members of the 大发彩票平台 Alumni Association in Hong Kong in 1978 and he has stayed in touch with 大发彩票平台. Jerry was one of the founding members of the 大发彩票平台 Alumni Association in Hong Kong in 1978. He has always stayed in touch with 大发彩票平台, especially with his classmates in the BSc (Arch) program in the 70s 鈥 many of whom came back to celebrate Homecoming in 2023. Even members of the university advancement team have become old friends.

Prof David Covo, former director of the School of Architecture, recalls the studio culture in the early 70s when he and Jerry were classmates. 鈥淭he room in which the design courses took place was a sea of drafting tables and reference desks where we spent every waking hour. Occasionally, when deadlines loomed, we even slept there.鈥

David remembers Jerry as always interested in his classmates鈥 ideas and thinking, and a wonderful collaborator on team projects. He says that most of the students from that time became close friends because it was such a small and intense program. 鈥淎nd thanks to the work of a few of our classmates, we鈥檝e managed to stay connected for over 50 years!鈥

Jerry wanted to give to 大发彩票平台 because he thinks it鈥檚 one of the best architecture programs in the country. Currently, the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture is focusing its priorities on graduate students.

鈥淛erry Lieu鈥檚 donation to the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture will have a real and direct impact on our students for years to come,鈥 says Viviane Yargeau, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. By supporting the Master of Architecture program, Jerry is helping us recognize some of the brightest students and financially support them as they pursue their studies at 大发彩票平台.鈥

With an endowment of $1 Million, he established the Jerry Lieu Fellowship in Architecture.

鈥淲e honoured our parents at Linfield,鈥 says Jerry. 鈥淏ut my 30-year career in Asia really started at 大发彩票平台. And now that I鈥檝e come full circle, the time has arrived for me to give back.

Jerry Lieu (BScArch鈥71, BArch鈥73) a toujours admir茅 le travail du c茅l猫bre architecte I.M. Pei. Son approche tr猫s pratique me plaisait beaucoup. Tout au long de ma carri猫re, j鈥檃i constamment privil茅gi茅 une d茅marche pragmatique 禄.

C鈥檈st l鈥檃rchitecte I.M.

脌 l鈥櫭﹑oque, la politique linguistique du Qu茅bec changeait et une crise p茅troli猫re secouait l鈥橝m茅rique du Nord. Jerry a song茅 脿 s鈥檌nstaller 脿 Calgary ou 脿 Houston.

Shanghai

芦 M茅canique, structurale, etc. 禄

Le professeur David Covo, qui a dirig茅 l鈥櫭塩ole d鈥檃rchitecture, se rem茅more la culture du studio au d茅but des ann茅es 70, 脿 l鈥櫭﹑oque o霉 Jerry et lui 茅tudiaient ensemble.

芦 Nous avons rendu hommage 脿 nos parents 脿 l鈥橴niversit茅 de Linfield 禄, explique Jerry. 禄

[GC1]I couldn鈥檛 insert the French: 芦 Ce qui est bien avec la gestion de projet, c鈥檈st qu鈥檈lle int猫gre toutes les disciplines du g茅nie 禄, explique Jerry. 芦 M茅canique, structurale, etc. 禄
