Writing Effective Grant Proposals\n\n\n Mer edith Vanstone\, PhD\;  Lawrence Grierson\, PhD\n\n Abstract: Having a grea t idea is not sufficient to secure research funding. Successful grant writ ing requires the demonstration of scientific\, rhetorical\, collaborative\ , and social expertise. In this workshop\, we will discuss the funding lan dscape in Canada\, elucidating some principles of grant writing success in the field of health professions education and offering some directed advi ce based on our experience securing funding and acting as reviewers for fu nding agencies. We offer the provocation that grant writers should base th eir applications around the question “what do they want to fund?”. This qu estion encourages a service-based orientation to research based on health systems challenges\, decision-maker questions\, or topical problems that a re of central concern to the individual funding agency.\n\n Meredith Vansto ne\, PhD and Lawrence Grierson\, PhD are Associate Professors in the Depar tment of Family Medicine at McMaster University. Meredith holds a Canada R esearch Chair in Ethical Complexity in Primary Care. Lawrence is a scienti st with the McMaster Program for Education Research\, Innovation\, and The ory. They both engage in health professions education scholarship and educ ation program leadership\, directing McMaster’s MD/PhD program (Meredith) and Health Science Education graduate program (Lawrence). As grant writers \, Meredith and Lawrence have had success earning >24 million funding from funding agencies which are international (Greenwall Foundation\, Independ ent Research Fund Denmark)\, national (CIHR\, SSHRC\, RCPSC)\, and provinc ial (e.g.\, HAHSO\, PSI). Meredith and Lawrence will draw on these grant-w riting experiences as well as their experience responding to proposals and initiating partnerships to do education and health related policy work pa rtnered with and funded by decision-makers such as the CFPC\, CADTH\, and Simon Fraser University.\n\n DTSTART:20241024T130000Z DTEND:20241024T150000Z SUMMARY:IHSE MEETING URL:/ihse/channels/event/ihse-meeting-358637 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
