Alayne Adams Awarded Jonathan Campbell Meakins and Family Memorial Fellowship by the Institute of Health Sciences Education

Alayne Adams, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of Global Health at the �󷢲�Ʊƽ̨ Department of Family Medicine, has been awarded the 2025 Jonathan Campbell Meakins and Family Memorial Fellowship for her project, “Innovations in Global Primary Care Delivery.” This fellowship, administered by �󷢲�Ʊƽ̨’s Institute of Health Sciences Education (IHSE), recognizes excellence in medical education and supports transformative initiatives in health sciences.

Mark Yaffe: Pioneering Excellence in Elder and Mental Health Care

Dr. Mark Yaffe, a long-standing Professor and family physician at St. Mary’s Family Medicine Centre, has made extraordinary contributions to clinical practice, research and mentorship in Family Medicine. He is renowned for his pioneering work in elder care, including the development of the Elder Abuse Suspicion Index (EASI) and for his leadership in expanding rural medical training across Quebec. His numerous accolades, such as �󷢲�Ʊƽ̨’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Leadership in Learning, reflect his lasting impact on medical education and patient care.

Michael Klein: A Trailblazer for Family Medicine and Maternity Care

Dr. Michael Klein has profoundly shaped Family Medicine and maternity care through his pioneering research that transformed obstetric practices, his leadership in fostering collaborative, transdisciplinary education and his numerous accolades, including the Order of Canada. Originally from the U.S., he fled to Canada in 1967 because he refused to be a military physician during the Vietnam War.

Tracie Barnett Awarded King Charles III Coronation Medal for Outstanding Community Service

Tracie Barnett, PhD, Associate Professor at the Department of Family Medicine and researcher at the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Centre, has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of her exceptional contributions to public health and community service.

The World Health Organization recognizes Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, which affect more than 55 million people worldwide, as a global public health crisis of the 21st century. In a significant stride towards improving Alzheimer's care, Howard Bergman, MD, FCFP, FRCPC, FCAHS, C.Q and Isabelle Vedel, MD-MPH, PhD, both from �󷢲�Ʊƽ̨’s Department of Family Medicine played fundamental roles in shaping the first Quebec Alzheimer Ministerial policy, launched earlier this year.

On March 26, 2025, �󷢲�Ʊƽ̨ Palliative Care held the third lecture of their National Grand Round Series at the Jewish General Hospital, a program supported by nine local hospital foundations and their partner, Pallium Canada. This initiative aims to disseminate the latest innovations, research and ideas in palliative care to communities across Canada and beyond, particularly those who may not typically have access to academic speakers.

This month, an article was published by the College of Family Physicians of Canada that reinforced what most of us already knew: there is no replacement for a family doctor! Specifically, the research found that Canadian patients are significantly more comfortable receiving care from family doctors they know and primary care teams that feature family physician expertise, versus a non-physician care provider. We can all feel inspired and grateful for this confirmation as we continue our clinical work, our patient advocacy work, and our research.
